A Tribe Called Red - Edited for DTP

It is important for student to learn about all different types of music. One example if a song called “Stadium Pow Wow” by A Tribe Called Red (ATCR) featuring Black Bear. ATCR says there group is “Looking to the future, without losing sight of their past, ATCR [straddling] a broad range of musical influences based in modern hip-hop, traditional pow wow drums and vocals, blended with edgy electronic music production styles” (Press). The band came across their sound at a local electric pow wow nights in their home town of Ottawa. This song represents a new era for the group. It is the first time they worked closely with a drum group. (‘A Tribe Called Red…’, 2016). The use of traditional vocal techniques, drum rhythms, and electronic beats creates a fresh sound that is unique to Canadian Indigenous culture. The video shows the everyday lives of different Indigenous people of all ages and communities. The video brings awareness that indigenous people live normal lives in Canada. The video shows how different people like to express themselves, and how they like to have fun! One of the people highlighted in the video is wearing a traditional outfit and performing a traditional dance in a field. There are also subtle hints within the video of the trans-Canada pipeline controversy. The video does a nice job of stating their political views without making it the sole purpose of the video.

In a classroom, it is important to show different musical cultures around the world, but especially Canada's own musical history. It is important to share Aboriginal music with our students as it is such a rich culture. A Tribe Called Red is a group to share with students that may be closer to the type of music they listen to today.
