The activity I want to lead I’ve called listen and clap. This will help the class to focus their attention to what is going on around them while actively performing a rhythm. This can help students in an ensemble setting as they need to be aware of conductors ques and their blend while performing. The first thing I would do is have the students arrange themselves in a circle. I would then tell the class that this is a rhythm and listening game and explain the game. There will always be one person who is the rhythm master and decides what the group's rhythm is. They can change the rhythm up while they are the rhythm master. I will show an example and stress to keep it simple so everyone can easily join in. I then explain that I can overrule the rhythm masters powers and choose a new person to create the rhythm by tapping their shoulder. I will share that I may be obvious or discrete about who the next person may be. This will take about a minute to a minute and a half. Next the game will begin with a volunteer rhythm master. At random times I will tap people in the circle. I will begin with large obvious motions and gradually diminish the amount of movement I make. After about two minutes I will end the activity. For the final minute or two, we can discuss the difficulties from the activity and how we can link this to a better experience within an ensemble context.
